Salta Welcomed OMPT During the Longest Fampress in the History of Tourism Journalism

Fernando García Soria and his team from the City Tourism Board hosted the World Organization of Travel Journalism (OMPT) during the longest Fampress in the history of tourism journalism. This programme brings journalists to travel, explore and narrate diverse destinations on location.

The capital city of Salta holds a special position within the province’s tourism offering. 60% of Salta’s tourist attractions are located within the city. This high concentration explains why the capital is not merely a gateway to Salta Province, but a destination with its own unique identity.

Exploring Salta means discovering a city where heritage, culture, faith and customs are embedded in daily life. Its streets, historic sites, cultural traditions and local cuisine shape its distinctive character.

Yet one feature sets the city apart on Argentina’s tourism map: the peñas. Salta is Argentina’s capital with the most peñas operating 365 days a year. Music and cultural expressions are not staged solely as shows for visitors; these venues keep local culture present permanently across the city.

In Salta, culture and tourism also converge in traditions that reflect an identity deeply rooted in northern Argentina. Music, customs, gastronomy and heritage create an experience that invites travellers to see beyond postcard views of the city.

For OMPT, this visit was also a chance to practise on-site tourism journalism. To tell the story of a destination is not simply to list attractions. It means observing local lifestyles, what is preserved, what is celebrated, what is shared, and what awaits arriving travellers.

The warm reception by Fernando García Soria and his team at the City Tourism Board embodied this spirit of connection between tourism practitioners and those tasked with telling its stories.

Within this longest-ever Fampress for Travel journalism, Salta showcased its most recognizable traits: a city where tourist attractions, culture, food and traditional expressions coexist, and where peñas sustain one of the most authentic ways to live and share Salta’s identity.
