Between journeys and words: Laura Salas’ story in travel journalism

Laura Salas is a journalist who found her path in travel journalism almost by chance, though with a passion that quickly turned into commitment. Her first experience in the field came after hearing about this discipline from Miguel Ledhesma during high school,an encounter that sparked her curiosity and led her to enroll in the Diploma in Travel Journalism in 2018. From then on, her connection with travel journalism grew steadily, especially after participating in activities of the WTJO in Buenos Aires and receiving the award in the breakthrough tourism category, a recognition that reaffirmed her vocation.

The 2018 Travel Journalism Congress in Puerto Iguazú marked a turning point in her career. It was her first trip alone, her first time on a plane, her first congress, and her first opportunity to interact with journalists of different ages and nationalities, allowing her to broaden both her professional and personal perspectives. These experiences revealed a wide range of possibilities and strengthened her decision to dedicate her career to communicating with honesty and sincerity.

Laura believes that travel journalism is a tool to combat misinformation and to genuinely convey the experiences that leave a mark on her. Her philosophy is grounded in transparency, respect, and continuous education, values she cultivates through workshops and courses offered by the WTJO. Within the organization, her main contribution has been translating content into English and Portuguese in order to reach a broader audience and give visibility to the work of her colleagues, as well as to local communities and innovative projects such as the publication El Mundo al Revés.

Her interest in travel journalism goes beyond communication itself. She seeks authentic experiences, free from traditional travel packages, and finds inspiration in northern Argentina for the warmth and hospitality of its people. For Laura, the profession involves informing, storytelling, training, and teaching with responsibility, distinguishing herself from untrained influencers who may compromise the credibility of the sector. Her motivation centers on learning, growing, and living transformative experiences that shape her path and contribute to both her personal and professional development.
