On November 27, during a press conference held at the Morasurco Hotel in Pasto, Nariño, Colombia, the department of Nariño officially became the eighth destination to join the Global Emerging Destinations Network. In front of more than 50 local and international journalists, the Administrative Directorate of Tourism of Nariño, along with representatives from Morada Sur, Ayllú, and the World Travel Journalism Organization (WTJO), signed the agreement marking a milestone in the promotion and development of sustainable tourism in the region.
A Strategic Step for Nariño’s Tourism Development
The Global Emerging Destinations Network is an international initiative aimed at empowering locations with significant cultural, natural, and historical value that have yet to achieve global recognition. Its focus is on promoting responsible and sustainable practices, empowering local communities, and showcasing the richness of the world’s most authentic destinations.
During the event, Kevin Casanova, General Director of the WTJO, highlighted the importance of this milestone: “Nariño is a prime example of how cultural and natural wealth can drive tourism development. Its inclusion in the Global Emerging Destinations Network will not only position the department on the global map but also establish it as a model of sustainable and community-focused tourism.”
Current Members of the Global Emerging Destinations Network
With Nariño’s inclusion, the network now comprises eight destinations working together to promote sustainable tourism and strengthen tourism communication. The current members of the network are:

2. Candelaria, Colombia
3. Riofrío, Colombia
4. Trujillo, Colombia
5. Buga, Colombia
6. San Javier, Misiones, Argentina
7. Concepción de la Sierra, Misiones, Argentina
8. Nariño, Colombia
