Speaking about this urban beach located in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria—the capital of the stunning island of Gran Canaria—is like being transported to a vibrant, expansive space full of life and activities. It attracts an increasing number of tourists, especially from Northern Europe, and is just as beloved by locals, who proudly showcase and share it.
This archipelago, the Islas Canarias, is made up of seven islands. It belongs to Spain and is located south of the Península Ibérica, facing the African coast. It is a cultural crossroads, yet retains an authenticity seen in the warmth of its people, their Caribbean-like melody when speaking, a rich culinary tradition, folkloric dances, and music that fills everyday life with the rhythms of isas, folías, and malagueñas for those fortunate enough to visit.
In the privileged northeastern corner of the island lies this three-kilometer stretch of fine golden sand known as Playa de Las Canteras . Between the areas of La Puntilla and La Cícer, it offers countless attractions ready to be enjoyed by all. Naturally, the beach is divided into three distinct sections, each with its own charm.
At the northernmost end, beginning at La Puntilla and stretching for just over a kilometer, lies the area known as Playa Grande, the most sheltered part of the beach. It is protected by a natural volcanic rock formation known as La Barra, which shields the shore from strong winds and waves.
This reef is a major attraction. It appears and disappears with the tides, often visible in the mornings when it draws a variety of seabirds. Swimmers can even reach it from the shore.
Next comes Playa Chica, about 100 meters long and known for being the rockiest section. It is followed by the final stretch: La Cícer or Guanarteme, which completes the beach's three-kilometer length. Without the protective reef, this section is known for its strong waves—making it a true paradise for extreme sports lovers.
This last stretch ends with the majestic Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, named after the celebrated tenor born in the city. His voice carried the name of his island around the world. The auditorium, a stunning piece of architecture with cutting-edge technology, hosts performances by internationally renowned artists.
Running parallel to the beach is the iconic Paseo de Las Canteras—a lively promenade filled with hotels, shops, restaurants, bars, and open-air terraces. It invites visitors to stroll at any time of day, enjoying a laid-back, fun, and natural environment. On clear days, you can even spot the majestic Volcán de El Teide, a snow-capped volcano on the neighboring island of Tenerife. It is also the highest peak in Spain.
Las Canteras is also a central gathering point for the local population, playing host to various celebrations throughout the year: Carnival, New Year’s Eve, maritime processions, and the famous Hogueras de San Juan every June 24th. These events are filled with music, family warmth, and, of course, spectacular fireworks that light up the sky with figures—especially the emblematic Canarian palm tree.
In short, for anyone in Madrid, don’t miss the opportunity to discover this little paradise—just over two hours by plane. Las Canteras Beach has received the Q for Quality Certification, the Blue Flag classification, and the Universal Accessibility Certification, providing services and facilities for people with reduced mobility.
If you visit this unique archipelago, we invite you to explore this beach that lives in the very soul of Las Palmas and to enjoy the unmistakable Canarian flavor by the sea.
